The true star of all three X-Men films (fact), Wolverine is getting his very own film. Taking the form of a prequel to the trilogy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will see Hugh Jackman reprise his signature role. The film will chart the beginnings of the character, his discovery of the world of mutants and the Weapons X programme. Previous X-Men characters Sabretooth and William Stryker will also feature.
This first look of the character has appeared today (courtesy of USA Today) and it’s rage-tastic.
The Wolverine we’ve seen so far has been pretty wild and grumpy, but an origins story promises a completely feral creature. This picture indicates that Jackman is going in the right direction with the character.
Although if we just had Adamantium forcibly fused to all of our bones, we’d be looking pretty pissed off too.
That or he really needs to go to the toilet. Poor lad should eat more fibre – an adamantium poo has got to hurt.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is due for release on 1st May 2009 (that is so far away!). It is directed by Gavin Hood (who we like for Tsotsi, but were disappointed in for Rendition), with screenplay by David Benioff (who we like for 25th Hour, dislike for Troy and are highly indifferent to for The Kite Runner). It is, however, being produced by Jackman’s own company, Seed Productions, which is good. We like Jackman. He’s getting better and better (see The Prestige and The Fountain; ignore Scoop), he has a lot of respect for the Wolverine character and he’s very, very handsome.
Like, really handsome.
